5 takeaways as Orioles sweep Red Sox at Fenway Park initially appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Red Sox’ very first home series of the season began with a lovely homage to the late Tim Wakefield and the 2004 World Series group. It was all downhill from there.

The ruling champ Baltimore Orioles offered the Red Sox– who got in with a 7-3 record– a truth check. Boston was swept in the series with all 3 losses being available in squashing style.

Now 7-6 and 3 video games behind the first-place New York Yankees, the Red Sox will seek to return on track versus the Los Angeles Angels (6-6) at Fenway Park. The three-game series starts Friday night with Tanner Houck handling Reid Detmers, who shut Boston’s bats down in the club’s one loss to the Angels in Anaheim recently.

Before we turn the page to Red Sox-Angels, here are 5 huge takeaways from the series loss to Baltimore.

Much for those “vibes”

“If they provide prizes for vibes, we are up there.”

That’s what Red Sox supervisor Alex Cora informed WEEI right before Opening Day following another disappointment offseason for the company.

We saw what he implied while the group left to a strong 7-3 start. After taking 2 out of 3 in Anaheim to finish up the West Coast journey, Cora doubled down on his remark.

“I understand we make jokes about the ambiance, however the ambiance is genuine,” he informed press reporters. “Excited about the group. We got to head out there and play. It’s enjoyable.”

The vibes undoubtedly were high when the wins were accumulating, however the Red Sox collapsed at the first blush of difficulty. Outfielder Jarren Duran dropped a regular fly ball with 2 outs in the 4th inning of Tuesday’s home opener and the next player, Colton Cowser, capitalized with a two-run single to provide Baltimore a 3-1 lead. The video game continued to unwind from there as the O’s travelled to a 7-1 win.

The clubhouse vibes could not have actually been lower following the loss. While shortstop Trevor Story tearfully dealt with the news he will go through season-ending shoulder surgical treatment, Duran ripped himself to shreds for his mistake that triggered Baltimore’s rally.

“I simply (curse) suck, male,” Duran stated. “It’s my (curse) fault, guy. If I make that play, we leave the inning and after that none of those other (curse) things take place.”

The icing on the cake was the news– which was revealed before very first pitch– that Nick Pivetta was put on the hurt list with an ideal flexor stress.
