Conner Smith Enlists Hailey Whitters for a Metaphoric Game of ‘Roulette’: ‘I Knew the Song Was a Next Level for Me’

Conner Smith made his very first leading 20 single when his swampy speedster, “Creek Will Rise,” worked its method to No. 12 on Country Airplay. Its torrid rate and pickup theme likely made more than a couple of listeners think about Garth Brooks’ “Ain’t Goin’ Down (Til the Sun Comes Up).”

The follow-up– “Roulette on the Heart,” including a singing help from Hailey Whitters — looks like a nation traditional from the other end of the energy spectrum, the Brad Paisley/Alison Krauss duet “Whiskey Lullaby.” Like that ballad, “Roulette” sets a male and female solo artist in a Dobro-heavy piece developed around a dark, fatalistic story. In “Whiskey,” the plot records an alcohol-infused double suicide, sustained by damaged hearts. Smith’s mixture, communicated at a somewhat quicker pace, leans on Russian live roulette as a metaphor for danger in a relationship with a wild female.

Smith didn’t have “Whiskey” in his mind when he produced “Roulette” in early December 2022, however he noticed a significance about his work from the start.

“When we composed it, I understood the tune was various,” he enables. “I understood the tune was a next level for me. It seemed like a tune for me — and it still does– that might last for a long period of time, in such a way that I do not believe I’ve put out a tune before. Therefore it mattered a lot.”

Smith had his then-girlfriend — internet user Leah Thompson, whom he wed on April 12– in mind when he established the “Roulette” title, which grew from the fundamental threat in both single-bullet video games of possibility and extending love to another.

“When you’re in those [intense] relationships, the truth is you get wed or you separate,” Smith describes. “You either discover the individual for the rest of your life or you shatter your heart when you fall for somebody, which video game, in and of itself, is live roulette.”

Smith brought the title up throughout a composing retreat at a Tennessee cabin owned by Thomas Rhett. He composed 2 tunes at the same time, “Roulette” and the title track to his EP How It Looks From Heremoving about every half hour from one composing space to the other. That is, it ends up, a perfect scenario for him.

“I’ve been composing with him for a very long time now,” states songwriter Mark Trussell (“Your Place,” “Good Time”). “What I’ve discovered is that he does type of requirement to march and go back in. It’s excellent for him artistically to take a break and return. And after that he returns genuine fresh, and he can simply get a guitar and spit out an entire verse. He’s actually proficient at doing that.”

Trussell and co-writers Jessi Alexander (“Light on in the Kitchen,” “Chevrolet”) and Chase McGill (“5 Foot 9,” “Break Up in the End”) were all on board with “Roulette.” McGill established a folky,
